Walmart Stores Inc. became the world’s largest company as far as revenue is concerned. In 2016, the organization registered $480 billion according to Fortune Global 500. However, even big guys can make mistakes. The company has recently apologized for a massive blunder. One of its stores placed a back-to-school sign right above the gun display accidentally indicating that weaponry is a must-have product for the start of the educational year.
The Gun Display Was Accidentally Marked as Part of a Back-to-School Marketing Campaign
On August 9, 2017, Twitter delivered the first photos of an odd situation inside a Walmart supermarket. The visual content showed what appeared to be a large array of rifle products. However, directly over it, there were numerous banners with the message “Own the school year like a hero.” Social media community became appalled by this association and demanded explanations.
The sign is actually part of an ongoing marketing campaign within Walmart with the theme of superheroes. The material is targeted for students and has nothing to do with guns. On the contrary, it promotes clothing with super-hero logos on them such as the S for Superman as proper attire to resume the high school year.
Walmart Is the Largest Retailer of Weaponry in the United States
A spokesman for Walmart, Charles Crowson, informed the public that the company is currently identifying the store with the wrong display. The location remained unknown for some time, yet the team working on this issue acknowledged the photos as legitimate. However, the question remained whether the sign reached the wrong aisle with the help of employees or shoppers.
We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened.”
Walmart officials started receiving sensitive questions such as whether the sign was deliberately placed above gun display to evoke the increasing number of gun shootings on school campuses. They refrained from answering them. Walmart is currently the largest retailer of weaponry and ammunition in the United States. The light gun shopping process that enables almost anyone to purchase a deadly product sparked numerous scandals in the country.
