Topeka Zoo in Kansas has just registered a great loss for their community. Their 49-year-old gorilla Tiffany lost the battle with death due to ovarian cancer. Veterinarians managed to trace the disease yet not in time to take advantage of several solutions. Therefore, the condition managed to evolve to a stage 4 of metastasized ovarian cancer. The magnificent creature passed away several days after a constipation surgery.
Veterinarians Got Worried that Gorilla Tiffany Didn’t Show Signs of Recovery after a Constipation Surgery
Last Wednesday, the Topeka Zoo organized the proceedings for a surgery that their 49-year-old lowland gorilla needed due to constipation issues. The goal of the procedure was to have a large part of stool from her colon removed. Despite the success of the surgery, the animal was still not showing signs of recovery.
On Sunday, gorilla Tiffany was programmed for some CT scans. This way, doctors hoped to discover why there were no recorded improvements regarding her well-being. The test results uncovered the true health issues that the animal suffered. The photos showed two abdominal masses. Eventually, physicians identified the tumors as malign. Tiffany’s condition was already progressed to stage 4 ovarian cancer.
Surgeons Couldn’t Remove the Malign Tumors and Euthanized the 49-Year-Old Animal
As a consequence, surgeons attempted to remove the tumors on Sunday. However, the cancer was already linked to the abdominal wall which made it impossible to eliminate. During this procedure, veterinarians and surgeons had to take a difficult decision.
In the end, they decided that it is in Tiffany’s best interest to no longer wake her up. The gorilla was euthanized the same day. Topeka Zoo director Brendan Wiley explained that the beloved member of their community couldn’t have received treatment for her illness.
“We just could not see an appropriate way to administer a regimen of chemotherapy to treat the cancer.”
The bad news found support on social media. People who visited the attraction are still remembering the gorilla. It was a local tradition to offer Tiffany gifts for Christmas and her birthday in July.
