North Korea revealed a concerning threat to the U.S. population. The leader of the country eyed Guam as a possible target to launch their medium-range ballistic missiles. Hundreds of thousands of lives are now depending on the relationship between North Korea and the United States. The small island is also hosting American military base.
Recent U.N. Sanctions on North Korea Must Have Triggered the Nuclear Bomb Threat
President Donald Trump responded to North Korea’s threat with another threat. The words of the American President fueled the war hypothesis that freezes the country. He stated that failing to stop the threats would mean that North Korea would be “”met with fire and fury and, frankly, power, the likes of which this world has never seen before.”
The communist country started openly suggesting a nuclear bomb launch at the U.S. territory. This happened after the U.N. Security Council issued new sanctions on North Korea. The country has recenly ordered a missile launch as a test which drew international criticism. The state news channel is not at its first such threat. However, this is the first time when the country named a specific target for their attack which urged authorities not to take this news lightly.
Kim Jong Un Chose Guam as the First Target Since the State Hosts Large U.S. Military Base
The reason why Kim Jong Un chose Guam as the starting point of a nuclear war is that the small island hosts an American military base. In fact, official forces are actually covering 29% of the surface of the island. Some of the core points are U.S. Naval Base Guam, U.S. Navy Station, U.S. Air Force base, and several others. The unemployment rate is high in this area. However, the local economy is based on tourism and military operations.
The governor of Guam, Eddie Baza Calvo, mitigated the aftermath of North Korean threat through a video message posted on YouTube. The official reassured locals that there are actually in no danger despite what they heard. Nonetheless, Calvo is working with Homeland Security and the U.S. government to make sure the island remains under safe conditions.
The governor stated that Guam has several defense strategies that cover the entire surface of the island. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson commented on this situation as well claiming that there is no threat despite North Korea naming a specific nuclear bomb target. To underline his statement, Tillerson would not back away from an upcoming scheduled refueling stop to North Korea.
