The city that doesn’t sleep is not as dreamy as many might think, as mental illness spreads within New York. As sad as it might sound, one in every five people living in NY suffers from various mental problems, ranging from psychological disorders to depression or thoughts of suicide, which often lead to substance abuse.
Overdoses of drugs and alcohol are also reported to have increased lately, mostly related to synthetic marijuana and opioids. Most people affected seem to be teenagers, as well as poor people and the ones who are part of minorities. This is because they are less likely to receive the proper care.
The report was released yesterday, right before the planned NYC Thrive initiative for mental health by Bill de Blasio, which is a program for preventing and treating psychological disorders.
Furthermore, the initiative includes the investment of $386 million over the next three years. Chirlane McCray, de Blasio’s wife, is leading the program. There is currently very little information regarding NYC Thrive initiative, but we know that one of its goals is to be able to track more effectively persons suffering from mental health problems.
Dr. Gary Belkin, deputy commissioner, has stated that the reason for the high rate of mental issues among New Yorkers is the existence of some issues regarding public health, and this is affecting people on a psychological level. He also confirmed that measures are currently being taken and that more information will be published soon.
It is well known that people living in large cities are prone to many factors among psychological issues, mainly caused by the way of living and stress. The report is not surprising taking into consideration that most people have limited free time, and in big cities they waste a lot of it on their way to work.
The stressful living conditions that many New Yorkers experience also at home does not help their mindset. In the end, without stability and balance in our lives, such processes will continue and we have to take into consideration the fact that mental illness spreads within New York is not singular.
