Malaria may be the fighting weapon against cancer, new study reveals.
Cancer is a popular disease which causes many deaths in nowadays society. That’s why doctors try to find its cure and it seems that they accidentally managed to do that. The discovery consists of a malaria protein.
While Danish doctors tried to find a new way of keeping pregnant women safe from malaria, as it is affecting the placenta, they also discovered that malaria proteins can fight against cancer. This approach may be a step towards finding the cure for this disease.
Scientists combined a protein used in malaria vaccines with a toxin, thus killing the cancerous cells. They found out that in each of the cases the protein attaches to the same carbohydrate. This carbohydrate makes sure that the placenta grows rapidly.
Scientists declared that they have long tried to take benefits from the similarities that exist between the placenta and the tumor.
“The placenta is an organ, which within a few months grows from only few cells into an organ weighing approx. two pounds. Tumors do much the same, they grow aggressively in a relatively foreign environment,” declared Ali Salanti from the University of Copenhagen.
The experiment was made on mice suffering from cancer. The results were published in Cancer Cell journal. In the next four years, however, scientists hope to be able to test the discoveries on humans in order to find a proper treatment method.
Salanti raised the question if testing on humans would be possible. The idea came after he thought that human body may not be able to tolerate the doses without displaying side effects.
The tests on mice included 3 types of cancer: non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, prostate cancer and bone cancer.
