CEO and founder of Cruise Automation, Kyle Vogt, continued to lead this startup even after General Motors purchased the business last year. It was the right decision as after only several months the partnership led to the mass-production of their first commercial autonomous car. They now have a car design that is capable to host the level 5 autonomous technology. This software can drive passengers on the roads by its own. However, the project will remain on standby until regulations endorse driverless cars on their streets.
Cruise CEO Claimed that Their Commercial Autonomous Car Is the First One in the World Designed for Mass Production
Vogt announced that the Cruise helped GM create its first ever production design of an autonomous car. The manufacturing indications for this model were created specially to accommodate mass distribution.
The product is equipped with all the necessary features to become capable of navigating the world without the help of a driver. It simply needs software development to take over as the artificial brain behind daily operations.
While there are several companies in the competition for the self-driving tech leader, Vogt claimed that this product represents a premiere in the market. That’s because this is the first model of a commercial autonomous car in the world that can be ‘mass-producible.’
By comparison, the current leader in this industry, Tesla, is going to great length to produce several hundreds of cars per year. However, GM plans to lift this number to hundreds of thousands of such assets within the span of one year.
“The key challenge, and what’s hard especially for tech companies, is building the cars.”
GM Has to Devise a Level 5 Autonomy Tech Which Cars Will Receive as a Software Upgrade
The new product will be an EV Chevrolet Bolt with third-generation Cruise self-driving platform incorporated. The plant in charge of the production will be the Orion facility in Michigan.
Although the prototype looks exactly like the new line of Chevrolet, Vogt claimed 40% of its components are brand new. The company has already manufactured 50 such vehicles, and there are many others in the making.
Although the new GM car is fully equipped to support a self-driving software, the technology is not yet ready. It will take a time before the company produces the supreme level 5 autonomy which enables cars to function without any driver’s assistance at all. When the breakthrough is made, Chevrolet Bolt owners will only have to download the software to make them autonomous.
