The gluten-free diet is becoming more and more popular nowadays. Despite its popularity, it is seemingly not that great for the health. A recently released study shows that it may actually have adverse effects on the heart. This research found a link between gluten-free diets and heart disease.
Harvard Specialists Studied the Effects Of A Gluten-Free Diet
Experts from Harvard Medical School stated that people who don’t eat gluten have fewer whole grains in their body which can increase the risk of heart disease. The only ones who should follow a gluten-free diet are those who suffer from celiac disease and are intolerant to gluten. Health experts recommend individuals who don’t suffer from this condition to eat products that contain gluten.
A lot of people are following this diet and researchers carried out many tests to study its effects. Their results showed that gluten-free foods are not great for our health. Everything we eat has an impact as it provides, or not, the necessary vitamins and minerals. When we decide to stop eating gluten, the body will stop benefiting from whole grains. In turn, this can affect our system.
Gluten can be found in wheat, barley, and rye. This ingredient ensures elasticity during the baking process of different products, for example, pastry. People with a wheat-free diet sometimes associates gluten with an increase in the risk of psychiatric problems, metabolic issues, and obesity.
These New Results Come From A Long-Term Study
Harvard researchers decided to test the benefits of this diet on the heart. The scientists monitored 110,000 people for 25 years. They mentioned that there was no association between gluten and heart diseases. Instead, they observed that individuals who eat less gluten don’t benefit from whole grains. This can affect the heart and increase the risk for cardiovascular problems.
“The avoidance of gluten may result in reduced consumption of beneficial whole grains, which may affect cardiovascular risk,” mentioned the researchers.
Previous studies showed that a gluten-free diet could increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Harvard researchers were also behind one of these studies. Their research showed that people who eat gluten have a 13% lower risk of developing diabetes. All of the studies indicate that there are no real health benefits for those who have a self-imposed gluten-free diet.
