Even though Game of Thrones left people with an ending that is open to interpretations, the final scene was rich in details and crucial events for the war for the Iron Throne. After her Unsullied were wasted on an inexistent battle for the castle of Casterly Rock, Daenerys is back in the game. However, she didn’t give in to her impulse to go on her dragon alone. Instead, she found a middle way between the strategies proposed by Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister.
Daenerys Proves She Can Be the Fearless and Intelligent Queen Everyone Is Waiting for
The mother of dragons refrained her urge in the latest episode of Game of Thrones, The Spoils of War, to set King’s Landing on fire. Instead, she went for the Lannister army with her dragon and Dothraki army. This way, she risked no civilian life. Therefore, she becomes the queen she wants to be. She doesn’t step in her mad father’s footsteps, and she avoids perpetuating the mistakes of every usurper before her by resorting to sheer violence instead of intelligence and clemency.
By seizing a vulnerable point for the Lannister army, Daenerys revealed her strength for the first time in the war for the Iron Throne. Up to this point, she lost most of her allies and wasted the force of the Unsullied on a fake opportunity. Therefore, the final scene brings her the much-needed victory.
The Final Scene Gives Tyrion’s Conflicting Feelings Away
Another point of interest was Jaime Lannister’s fall in the depth of the water. It is uncertain if he survives given the fact that his heavy armor pulls him down drowning him. However, if he is saved, he will most surely become the hostage of Daenerys. Given that he is both brother and lover to the current Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, he will prove to be a valuable war asset.
On the other hand, the episode caught Tyrion’s genuine concern for his brother. Therefore, his loyalty might be put to the test in the following episode. While he hates his sister Cersei to death, he actually loves his brother Jaime. As a consequence, he might end up freeing the most important hostage to Dragon Mother.
The short battle also showed Daenerys one of the few cards that Cersei holds in this war, the Dragon Killer. Drogon manages to destroy the giant crossbow for good. Even though Cersei could rebuild the equipment, it is obvious that the arrow was not as effective as they hoped it to be.
