A new research focused on showing the effects of the clean eating diet on the human body. Although the diet’s adepts believe that it is beneficial for the body, it requires quite a strict regime that lacks beneficial nutrients necessary for a balanced lifestyle. Since the trend has taken social media by storm, experts worry that more people will adopt the diet without considering its side effects.
What Is the Clean Eating Diet?
The clean eating diet consists of eating only fresh meals, cooked from scratch. People who start this diet need to give up on refined sugar. Until now, it sounds like a piece of cake, and a healthy one at that. The problem is that people also need to eliminate grains, gluten, and dairy. Since grains are filled with all kinds of fibers and vitamins, gluten boosts the immune system, and dairy products provide plenty of calcium, vitamin D, and proteins, a diet that relinquishes them could do more harm than good.
Several studies have shown that gluten-free food is not the best choice because it can lead to diabetes. Now, a study conducted by the Osteoporosis Society shows the effects of cutting dairy out of your diet. Scientists discovered that more than 40% of young adults aged between 18 and 25 have tried diets that exclude dairy products.
Increasingly more people are trying these types of diets. Even celebrities who promoted the clean eating diet are starting to distance themselves from it. Melissa Hemsley, for example, mentioned that during the first weeks of the diet, she felt great. However, the blogger’s body soon started to show signs of weakness, her newly discovered food regime lacking vital nutrients.
Health experts mentioned that it is important to include all food groups in a diet. Once you eliminate one food group – without having a medical reason – you can develop a variety of health problems. The only cases when it is allowed to cut off one food group is when you have an allergy. If this is not the case, the best way is to eat less and include all major food groups.
The clean eating diet is becoming increasingly aggressive. While it is great to cut down on refined sugar and fat, eliminating gluten, dairy, and grains can be bad for your health. Researchers also mentioned that people who eliminate dairy from their diets have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis due to calcium and vitamin D insufficiency.
What is your opinion about this study? Do you think that these diets are healthy?
