414 American cities will soon be underwater, study reveals.
Although people realized the big danger climate change poses to humanity, it seems that they understood that too late, as many cities and town in America will be lost to the sea.
For many Americans, regardless of the measures they want to take in order to prevent the climate change, this seems to be too late, as their town and cities will be lost underwater.
The decrease of carbon emissions will not be enough in order to save 414 town and cities in America.
“Historic carbon emissions have already locked in enough future sea level rise to submerge most of the homes in each of several hundred American towns and cities,” declared Climate Central.
The study was published this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. Among cities that are threatened by water, there are some with big populations, such as Miami and New Orleans.
40% of the people that will be affected by water are living in Florida.
The reason why Miami is on the list of soon-to-be-covered-by-water cities is that the soil is formed of permeable limestone.
Scientists could establish the date when the flood will take place, but they say that the event will surely take place. They also declared that the study helps other cities to be precautious and to reduce carbon emissions.
Benjamin Strauss, the study’s lead author, stated that the carbon emission could make a difference for many cities.
New York will also be threatened unless drastic measures are taken.
Carbon Central made a graphic which clearly indicates the areas that will vanish under water if pollution is not prevented.
Philadelphia, Virginia Beach, Sacramento, and Jacksonville are also under risk.
