More than 20,000 infected mosquitoes were released in the Florida Keys. Even though it might sound like a crazy experiment, these mosquitoes are infected with Wolbachia. The bacterium causes the eggs of the mosquitoes to die when infected males mate with uninfected females. This experiment is a new way to test the ability to kill the mosquito population.
These infected mosquitoes were released in the Florida Keys by a company named MosquitoMate that is based in Kentucky. This is not the first time the company tested this method. Previously, they tested it in California. MosquitoMate mentioned that it is a responsible way to get rid of these insects. They don’t use sprays or chemicals. This is why it is safer this way.
The insects are killing one another to say it in other words. Responsible mosquito control is a new way to get rid of mosquitoes. It is safer and cost-efficient in comparison to other sprays and chemicals. The male mosquitoes don’t bite, and the bacterium doesn’t affect people. This means that the only ones that are affected are the offspring which will not make it to adulthood.
Mosquitoes seem small and fragile, but they can be very dangerous. These insects can carry a lot of severe conditions including Zika. This disease has affected hundreds of people, including babies that were born from mothers who carried the disease. To stop the spread of Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases, health officials are trying to find new ways to kill these insects.
Genetically modified mosquitoes are also taken into consideration. These insects are provided by the British company Oxitec. Because residents and activists have protested against releasing these insects, the company needed to find a more remote area.
If these trials are successful, health experts just found a new tool to get rid of the mosquitoes. The risk of Zika and other mosquitoes-borne diseases will also decrease with time. Until then, we’ll have to wait for the results of the trials and hope for the best. Even though it is a bit unusual, this method could be the safest and most efficient one.
What is your opinion about this method? Do you think that it is safe to release infected mosquitoes?
