As odd as it would might sound, a new type of vending machine can help you curb the need for unhealthy snacks like chips or chocolate bars and instead reward you with food that has a higher nutritional value. This rather quaint vending machine has been developed and created by a team of medical researchers from the Rush University Medical Center. Moreover, the study involving the impact of altered vending machines on food choices was entirely funded by US’s National Institute of Health.
So, we have a vending machine that is capable of showing us that junk food such as chips and choco bars are a no-no and instead offer us something with a higher nutritional value. How is that possible? Well, according to the team of scientists behind this unique project, the new vending machine prototype works a delay-like system.
Picture this scenario: you’re at the office and come afternoon, your stomach starts to growl. However, to your misfortune, you can’t exactly leave your computer, since there is a project that needs your immediate attention. More than likely, the first thing that springs to mind is that you’ll skip going out to eat and, instead, try your luck at the food vending machine down the hallway.
It’s not exactly healthy, but at least you can have a quick snack and go back to work. The rest of the story is pretty easy to guess – insert the coin, get the snacks, and start munching. Well, things are about to change thanks to the researchers from the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Here’s how the new vending machine model works. Suppose you want to buy yourself a big bag of delicious chips during your food break. Now, instead of giving you the goods right after you cough up the dough, the new vending machine will make you wait 25 seconds more. However, if you choose a salad box over a bag of chips, the machine will dispense it immediately.
According to the study’s results, it would appear that approximately 2.5 percent of all people using the new vending machine decided to buy healthier food instead of waiting around for junk food. Although the experiment’s success can be considered marginal, the health authorities are now thinking of implementing the time delay system throughout the United States.
So, you better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, because the time delay vending machine for healthy snacks will be coming to your town soon enough.
