Twitter is currently testing a new feature which many users might enjoy. The social media platform wants to give people more space to express their views and thoughts by expanding the character limit to 280. However, this move might not necessarily be the most profitable for Twitter, and could bring future problems with it.
Twitter offers now users longer tweets
One of the main particularities of Twitter was the fact that users needed to be brief in their posts. With a limit of 140 characters, they had to express only the most vital information. Now, as the character limit increases, the social media platform is at risk of losing its individuality.
Social services are in a fierce competition, since most of them don’t want to be at a loss, and lack a feature which is present on other platforms. However, they also risk not bringing anything new, which leaves users with no reason to keep using the platform in question.
The platform has to keep users engaged, and offer them something unique
Twitter officials explained their decision to embrace a higher character limit in terms of language differences, namely that certain languages require a lot more space than others to transmit a message. This is true, but the main idea behind Twitter was to be brief.
In fact, the platform started embracing elements from other social media services quite a long time ago. Initially, users couldn’t upload photos or videos in their posts. If they wanted to do this, they had to share the source link as well, which occupied some character space.
As they saw users started getting tired of mere text and looked towards more image-friendly platforms, they allowed them to include videos and pictures as well. However, the character limit didn’t seem to be a problem. Now, the tricky task for Twitter is to keep offering users something unique, so that they won’t choose a different platform instead.
