Sleeping is an important factor that can help us stay healthy. Apparently, too much sleep can be a sign of dementia. A new research showed that sleeping for more than 9 hours every night can be associated with dementia. This sign of cognitive decline is usually noted in people with lower levels of education.
Although you might think that sleeping more is better for your brain, this research shows exactly the opposite. This study showed that elder people who sleep more than 9 hours showed signs of dementia. This research analyzed data from 2,500 older women and men.
The researchers observed that people who slept longer also had smaller brain volumes. Education is also important. The participants that did not have a high school degree and also slept for 9 hours had an increased risk of developing dementia.
This study was a 10-year long analysis. The researchers followed the sleeping patterns of 2,500 participants for more than 10 years. The wanted to see how sleeping can influence dementia. They mentioned that older people who sleep more than 9 hours every night have a higher chance of developing dementia.
Previous studies had mixed findings. Some studies showed that sleeping less than 8 hours can trigger dementia, while others confirmed this study by saying that too much sleep can trigger dementia. Apparently, sleep is very important for our brain but we need to be careful just how much we sleep.
The participants self-reported how much they sleep. They were asked at the beginning of the study, 13 years ago. They were also asked at the end of the study to see if their sleeping pattern has changed. The researchers observed that those who slept more now had bigger chances of developing dementia.
The scientists also mentioned that more than 230 people developed dementia while they were participating in this study. It was observed that those who developed dementia slept more than 9 hours a day. This study shows that your sleeping pattern can show when something is wrong. If you are starting to sleep more than 9 hours or less than 6 hours you should visit your doctor.
