A nail salon from Memphis, Tennessee was recently involved in a fat shaming scandal after its owner allegedly hanged up a sign which informed the customers that the establishment would charge extra for overweight individuals. The salon’s owner dismissed these claims but said that the sign is a great idea taking into account the fact that he already had to replace two spa chairs, which cost more than $2,500 each.
While on her way for a manicure, a woman from Memphis, Tennessee, observed a sign posted in front of a nail salon. The sign put up on one of the windows of the Rose Nails salon, located on Frayser Boulevard and Overton Crossing, was so offensive that the woman decided to take a picture and post it on her Facebook account. Needless to say, the overtly offensive sign got a lot of attention, with people saying that there’s no place in the city for this kind of behavior.
More specifically, the sign informed all customers that the Rose Nails Salon reserves its right to charge extra for pedicure services offered to overweight individuals. According to the customer’s post, the Tennessee nail salon usually charges $30 for a pedicure. However, the sign told an entirely different story.
When confronted, Son Nguyen, the establishment’s owner declared that he did not post the sign in front of his nail salon. Moreover, Nguyen said that given the fact that there are no distinctive elements in the picture which might associate it with his establishment, the picture could have been taken anywhere.
However, to everyone’s surprise, Nguyen argued that, in his opinion, the sign might not be a bad idea for a business and that he is seriously thinking about putting one up in front of his nail salon.
Nguyen also said that he only charges an $5 on men pedicures and manicures, since his clientele is composed of women. When asked about why he thought such a seemingly offensive sign is a good idea, Nguyen replied that his salon had a few unfortunate and expensive incidents in the past.
It would seem that Nguyen had to replace two expensive spa chairs after serving a couple of overweight customers. Although the Tennessee nail salon owner believes that this is a good idea, some of the Facebook users who commented on the woman’s pictures declared that this kind of fat-shaming is wrong and that the nail salon owner should reconsider his position if he wants to make his customers happy.
