If you ask children what they wish for, it’s either sweets or toys. And who can resist a child’s request? However, parents must always balance advantages and disadvantages of every action which has to do with their kids. When it comes to their nutrition, they must follow the doctor’s advice about sugar limit, which is six teaspoons a day.
The American Heart Association has recently released a statement, according to which six sugar teaspoons a day is the maximum quantity recommended for children aged 2 to 18. Babies under two years old should not consume any added sugar, as the specialists suggest.
Added sugar can be found in beverages and foods, as they are added in the process of preparation. Excessive consumption of produces rich in such components leads to body weight problems, heart diseases, diabetes, blood pressure issues and so on. The problem of overweight American children is critical in our society today.
Researchers inform us that contrary to their recommendation, American children tend to consume almost the triple quantity of sugar, which is the equivalent of approximately 18 teaspoons a day. They also suggest to parents that they should limit their children’s sugar amount at an early age so that their preference for healthy products should be shaped.
The organism of children under two years of age does not require much sugar, so it should be easy for parents to raise their children free of the temptation of sugary aliments. They only need 1,000 calories a day. As they grow up, excessive consumption of such products can turn into an addiction, which can have damaging effects on children’s health, as stated above. Statistics show that average teenager girls need 2,400 calories a day, whereas boys need 3,200 calories a day.
Doctor Miriam Vos ((Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta) is the main author of this study on nutrition . She talked about healthy eating habits for children:
“Children who eat foods loaded with added sugars tend to eat fewer healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products that are good for their consumption of added sugars.”
Researchers are very confident about their study and assure parents their results are right and supported by evidence. The only thing that parents have do now is taking care of both their children’s nutrition and their own.
Details on the nutrition recommendations can be found in the journal Circulation.
