It might be time to cut the alcohol from your diet, as it turns out it is far more dangerous than you thought. A recent study funded by the British Heart Foundation discovered the ideal quantity for an adult is one drink per day. This means that many countries should revise their drinking guidelines and significantly cut down alcohol consumption.
Drinking guidelines are a bit too high in certain countries
The results of the study highlighted a difference between different types of regular drinkers. Having seven drinks per week is fine, but those who consume more than that have more chances of dying a lot sooner. Therefore, the drinking guidelines should allow people to have only one alcoholic beverage per day.
Currently, the drinking guidelines in the US recommend seven drinks per week, but only for women. Men are allowed a little more, namely 14 drinks per week. However, it turns out there shouldn’t be any difference between women and men.
Men and women should consume the same amount of alcohol per week
According to the study, men aged around 40 who consume two drinks per week have a lower life expectancy than those who drink only one drink per week. In other countries, the drinking guidelines are even more extreme, with men being allowed to drink a lot more. However, everyone should follow UK’s example, which reduced the limits for men to those available for women.
To put up this study, researchers analyzed the results of 83 other studies from a total of 19 countries. These studies contained data on about 600,000 alcohol drinkers. Researchers analyzed the incidence of heart disease, and counted the number of deaths associated with different heart conditions, such as stroke.
Of course, the risks were higher among those who drank more. While the cases of heart attack were less common among heavy drinkers, they suffered other cardiac events. Therefore, limiting the drinking guidelines worldwide should reduce the number of such incidents.
The study has been published in The Lancet journal.
