The biggest Roman Catholic health organization in the U.S is being sued by a woman who got a sterilization ban despite the fact that she had a brain tumor. Doctors told this woman not to get pregnant again because of her brain tumor but when she wanted to be sterilized doctors said no.
The sterilization ban on religious grounds happened at Genesys Medical Center where the woman previously gave birth to 2 other babies. She knew the doctors and this is why she chose the facility again. The problem was that the doctors told their patients that they cannot perform the surgery to sterilize her because they have a sterilization ban.
Knowing that she is in danger if she doesn’t have a tubal ligation surgery she searched desperately for another hospital or facility that could perform both the C-section and the tubal litigation. She mentioned that she was shocked because the doctors at Genesys Medical Center did not help her.
The woman, Jessica Mann gave birth to a baby girl at another facility and in the same time she got her tubal litigation. This can keep her out of danger from now on because another pregnancy could affect the brain tumor that she has.
The Catholic health organization, on the other hand, says that they had every right to have a sterilization ban because they are a religious organization after all. They say that they did the best they could and that they respected the orders.
The problem here is that she could have died if she got pregnant again and the doctors from this facility should have performed the surgery. The best thing that happened is that Jessica Mann found a facility that helped her.
This is not the first time some health organizations have a sterilization ban and refuse to offer some of their services to others. They mention they are just respecting their religion and the catholic religion does not accept women who sterilize themselves or have an abortion. These are just rules that some doctors tend to maintain despite the fact that they can put somebody at risk or cause other severe problems.
