An event which took place on Sunday evening in Virginia shows that our ancestors knew a thing or two about life when they said never bring a knife to a gunfight. According to the Virginia State Police, a man was critically injured in a rest stop near Augusta country after threatening a state trooper with a knife. The officer who shot the suspect was not injured during the event.
A spokesperson for the Virginia State Police declared that the events leading to a man being severely wounded began on Sunday, at approximately 9:46 pm, when a driver dialed 911. The individual said that two individuals in a car were acting weird. When asked by the police by what he meant by ‘weird,’ the driver added that the two suspects made inappropriate comments about another motorist whose vehicle was parked at the same rest stop.
A squad was dispatched to the driver’s location in order to investigate the man’s allegation. According to the Virginia State Police’s statements, the events occurred at the rest stop located near the mile 232, near Augusta County.
After the police car had arrived, one of the state troopers exited the vehicle and went towards the suspect’s care in order to question the individuals. During the conversation, one of the car’s occupants jumped out of the car, crossed the median, and ran towards the north area of the rest area.
The state trooper who questioned the suspects had to pursue the man on foot. After a couple of minutes, the man stopped near the fence line and turned towards his pursuer. Seeing that he could no longer evade his pursuer, the man pulled out a knife and threatened to kill the police officer.
Seeing that the suspect became violent, the state trooper pulled out his gun and opened fire on the suspect. According to the Virginia State Police, the suspect was airlifted to the nearby hospital where he received medical treatment for his life-threatening injuries.
At the moment, it would seem that the suspect is still in a critical, yet stable condition. As for the state trooper who shot the knife-wielding suspect, the Virginia State Police declared that he’s been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
At this point, it’s still a little unclear what prompted the man to draw out his knife, or why did the state trooper felt it necessary to use his firearm.
