A Facebook post spread a lot of terror and got everybody ready for Halloween after displaying a short video of an unusually spooky moth. The insect had a terrifying appearance, and featured four ugly and hairy appendages coming from its rear. Until now, the post gathered over 41 million views, and left everybody curious about the actual origin of the moth.
The moth left everybody terrified
On October 19th, a user from Indonesia stumbled upon this devilish moth, Creatonotos Gangis, and decided to share it with the entire world. The pictures and video had the desired effect, as everybody cowered in terror and wished they wouldn’t ever meet the monster in person.
The dramatic effect was mostly given by the ugly appendages, but spreading fear is not their only purpose. These formations are useful during mating, as they are actually some glands which secrete male pheromones. Whenever they want to attract a female, these glands get bigger, as they fill with hormones.
Insects are vital for our ecosystems
However, there’s actually no need to be worried. The moth might look like it’s taken straight out of horror movies, but there’s no harm it can do to you. Most of the people don’t even have bug-phobia, they are merely creeped out by their appearance, so leaving insects alone to do their job is the best thing to do.
Although we hate them for being ugly, insects play a huge role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. First of all, they help in the pollination process, and keep organic waste under control by eating the excess. Also, they give us many materials which make up most of the everyday products we use.
Insects often adopt scary looks for the sake of protection, so they are more afraid of us than we are of them. This means we should do everything to protect them, and help them maintain the balance of our ecosystem.
