Ever since Galileo Galilei was punished by the Inquisition for claiming that the Earth revolves around the sun, the scientific community has not been very keen on religion, or its adepts, for that matter. But the latest studies have shown that spiritual people are more empathic than logical, detailed-oriented ones.
There were rumors among scientists that claimed people who believed in any religious figure or adhered to a particular spiritual community were less intelligent than the scientists who conducted studies to prove that.
But if art or literature taught as anything, it is the fact that you can’t judge a person’s intellect from his or her capacity for analytical or logical thinking. There are various types of intelligence, and emotional and social intelligence one of them.
According to a study conducted by a professor of philosophy, agnostics that prefer scientific reasoning over God theories are more likely to have a certain analytical intelligence. On the other hand, people who rely more on faith rather than stone cold scientific truth are more prone social and empathic.
Seeing as we live in the age of social interaction and a president is chosen more because of his ability to talk and reach out to the masses than that of crunching numbers or studying climate change, we could say that emotional intelligence is as valuable as any other kind.
Also, the researchers claim that women are more religious than their male companions, thus more capable of showing empathy and social ease. Moreover, the same study suggests that atheists have more chances of developing psychotic tendencies than people who live in fear of an all-powerful, all-knowing supernatural being.
A previous study even suggested that cultures that believe in a vengeful, punishing god are more likely to behave honestly than those who believe in a peaceful god, or have no religious affiliations whatsoever.
But it might be that spiritual people are more empathic than atheists because the first are more encouraged to pray, meditate and reflect.
Self-reflection can alter an individual’s behavior, making that person more aware of the people around him or her. Empathy may be derived from the regular “alone moments” when an individual reflects upon mundane problems.
On the other hand, people who are passionate about science have a tendency to spend their time analyzing and interpreting different facts and theories. They spend most of their days alone.
But there have been a lot of famous Nobel laureates for science that also nurtured a profound faith in God. They are the ones who found the perfect balance. The people that were capable of revolutionizing science while remaining humble and capable of understanding the needs of the other.
