Another violent episode took place yesterday in the parking lot of a Walmart store, as a snatcher killed a woman after stealing her purse. The unfortunate incident happened in Covington on Monday at around 7:45 p.m. The victim was identified as Marsha Penn Johnson, aged 65.
Captain Craig Treadwell, the spokesman for the Covington Police Department, released information about the case, as the authorities have the video recording from the store.
As seen on the surveillance video, a woman is loading her car with groceries in the parking lot of a Walmart store, located on Industrial Boulevard. Another car rolls into the view and parked close by. Next, a man snatches the woman’s purse as she fights back and ends up on the ground. The snatcher jumps back into his vehicle and has to back up repeatedly to get his car out. The victim is caught beneath the wheels of the car which runs over her several times.
The police arrived later to find the woman gravely injured. She was transported to a hospital where she later died.
A description was given for the suspect: he seems to be a big Hispanic male, with black hair and a weight of about 300 pounds. He is however not very tall and sports a goatee-style beard. At the time of the attack he was wearing blue jeans, white tennis shoes and a hooded sweatshirt in dark color.
The car he drove off with is a late light grey or silver Honda Accord model from the ’90s with four doors. The door from the driver’s side is damaged and it seems to have a temporary or out-of-state tag. A woman was seated on the passenger seat of the Honda.
People are encouraged to contact the Covington Police Department if they have information about the suspect or his car.
It is tragic that such events still happen, especially during reasonable hours and not in the middle of the night. Robbery is a petty crime, but when murder is involved there should be taken drastic measures. Perhaps the fact that a snatcher killed a woman after stealing her purse should trigger the initiative of establishing more secure public areas.
