Pediatricians issue a new set of rules regarding kids’ screen time. Ranging from toddlers to teenagers, they are all allowed to spend some time in front of the computer, but they also have to take a considerable break from the tech devices. Here are the specialists’ recommendations on how kids should divide their time between online and offline activities.
Former guidelines from doctors suggested that children under the age of two shouldn’t be exposed to the online media or tech devices. However, the new recommendations are not that strict. Parents could use online platforms to make children keep in touch with members of the family, such as grandparents. Nevertheless, apart from this communication purpose, doctors don’t recommend further screen time for young children.
Specialists also state that parents should always accompany children when using the online media or tech devices. Kids aged two to five shouldn’t be allowed to spend more than one hour in front of the computer, experts say. Parents should always monitor their activity and chose carefully the programs that their children watch.
There are no such strict rules about children aged more than seven. Technology and the online environment are part of our developing society, so they can’t be banned, and they shouldn’t. Children should know how to use them and benefit from them, but they shouldn’t use them excessively.
One of the important requests from doctors is that parents should make sure that their children spent enough time offline, engaged in different activities. Quality time spent with family, friends and pets is highly important and helps children develop their socializing skills. Doctors recommend that kids should be engaged in physical activities at least one hour a day because it helps them with their process of growth and bone development.
Sleep is another important aspect of children’s life. According to the doctors’ guideline, they should sleep eight to twelve hours, depending on the age group. They also explain that kids shouldn’t use tech devices one hour before going to bed, as light and noises can affect their sleep quality.
If parents make sure that children follow these rules and are engaged in different types of activities, then they will lead happy, healthy lives. They won’t face the risk of obesity, they will have a good ability to concentrate and will develop great socializing skills.
The guidelines regarding screen time for children and teenagers have been recently published in Pediatrics.
