Miracles happen every day and we can call it a miracle that scientists discovered the oldest stars ever.
That’s right, we might be talking about stars that have been around from the beginning, or close after everything began in our universe. In fact, researchers have estimated that these stars were around when the Universe was approximately 300 million years old and you have to imagine that its entire history comprises 13.8 million years of existence.
There has also been great speculation that these stars might have come into existence way before the Milky Way was properly formed. A student named Louise Howes, from the Australian National University, stated that the “stars formed before the Milky Way, and the galaxy formed around them” and this is why their discovery might tell us something about times that we can barely imagine.
Howes also worked with peers from Cambridge University. They all wanted to find stars that were not exactly “rich in ingredients” back when the Universe was taking shape. We could say that the lack of materials caused the Universe to improvise since there was not much to work with in the first place. If you wanted to find lithium, helium and hydrogen in space, you could find plenty of these, but anything else was either not formed yet or very difficult to find.
In order for the Universe to take shape, these old stars needed to die and give birth to new “materials” that would help with the shaping of the world. Scientists have always been interested in seeing how things evolved, from beginning to end and the discovery of these old stars might do just that: they will give a broad image of how things were before.
Space scientists have been able to track 23 such stars that lack metal and they will be the source of studies to come. What is also interesting is that 9 out of these special stars have way less metal than the sun itself has, so this is one of the pieces of the puzzle that researchers are just dying to toy around with. Hopefully, they will get all the information they need.
Scientists discovered the oldest stars ever and this is just one extra step towards understanding how the world, as we know it, began millions of years ago. With every passing day it seems like leaving Earth will be an option that will be available for us soon, so we must make the best out of every opportunity like this one.
