A study published recently in the British Medical Journal reveals that pregnant women who eat potatoes could develop gestational diabetes. If you really love potatoes, don not worry. All you have to do is eat less potatoes and make sure that you eat a lot of other vegetables and whole grains as well, and you are going to be just fine.
The gestational diabetes is the diabetes that develops when women are pregnant. Approximately 4% of the women get this type of diabetes during their pregnancy, mostly because the levels of glucose in their blood are very high. The women who are over 25, are overweight or have a family member who suffers from type 2 diabetes are at higher risk of developing gestational diabetes. Apparently, half of the women who have gestational diabetes end up having type 2 diabetes after they give birth. According to a dietitian called Rachel Berman, while the women are pregnant, the hormones impact the levels of the insulin that regulate the sugar and the glucose found in the bloodstream.
The study was led by Cuilin Zhang and involved 15,000 women, whose data was monitored for 10 years. They were asked to keep records of their diets and 854 women suffered from gestational diabetes during the course of the study. The more potatoes the pregnant women ate, the higher were the risks of developing gestational diabetes. But the researchers found out that if they replaced the potatoes with other vegetables for two weeks, the chances of developing gestational diabetes decreased with 12%. The results might have been influenced by the fact that the women who ate more potatoes usually smoked and weighed more as well. After factors like diet, weight and age were taken into consideration, the women who ate potatoes five times a week still had a double risk of developing this type of diabetes.
Potatoes can be dangerous during pregnancy because they have a high glycemic index. So the experts recommend eating more vegetables that have a low glycemic index, so the blood sugar doesn’t spike. According to the researchers, many people eat a lot of potatoes because they are easy to cook, they are delicious and they are also extremely affordable.
The study which revealed that pregnant women who eat potatoes could develop gestational diabetes was conducted by researchers from the Harvard University and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
