Firewatch fans will be delighted to hear that the game has become even more interesting. Campo Santo, Firewatch’s developer, has announced the latest game patch, which among fixes includes a free roaming mode for all those out there who want to explore the Wyoming wilderness.
Considering the game’s overwhelming popularity, only a few things can be said about Firewatch. In terms of genre, Firewatch is a first-person-perspective adventure/puzzle solving game which takes the player on a stroll through Wyoming densely forested areas.
The player takes the role of Henry, a modest member of the forest fire watch brigade, whose sole job is to look out for smoke and to alert the authorities in case of a wildfire. Henry himself is an enigmatic character, by definition – the only things we know about him is that he grew weary of his life in the big city, and sought the calmness brought forth by isolation.
Henry’s only link to the outside world is Delilah, his supervisor, who talks to him over the radio. Spoiler alert – Delilah doesn’t appear in the game, in person, but that doesn’t mean that she’s not meaningful. In fact, the ending on the highly depends on the emotional choice Henry makes when communicating with the ever-elusive Delilah.
Firewatch is mostly objective-oriented, meaning that Henry will have to travel to specific locations, discover clues and solve puzzles underway in order to disembroil a brooding mystery. In a word, not much time for exploration.
Campo Santo wanted to take the game to a whole new level by developing this mode that allows the player to explore their hearts out without being penalized. So, after downloading and installing the game’s latest patch, you will be able to roam around Wyoming as much as you like.
And when you grow tired of exploring the great plains and forests, you will be able to resume the game’s plot. The free-roaming mode was designed specifically for players who truly want to discover the essence of Firewatch – to explore and to survive in the great outdoors.
But if you think this mode is dull, then you think again. Imagine how it will be to find a way through a forest at night with nothing but the moonlight to guide your way. Or, even better, to study in more detail various woodland creatures.
The patch can be downloaded for free from Campo Santo’s official website.
