Women think healthy eating can help them get pregnant, so they often resort to consuming a lot of fruits and vegetables. However, this might not always benefit them, especially if these products are sprayed with pesticides. A recent research discovered over two servings of fruits and vegetables rich in pesticides reduce fertility, as well as the chances of giving birth to a healthy baby.
Pesticides put pregnant women in danger
Researchers developed a study where they studied the effect of fruits and vegetables on 325 women who underwent various treatments for infertility. The women had to answer several questions regarding their diets, as well as offer general information about their health condition. Afterwards, they established the levels of pesticides they had been exposed to, judging from the fruits and vegetables they had consumed.
Researchers could assess the pesticide exposure after analyzing the reports of the Pesticide Data Program, developed by the Department of Agriculture. The fruits with the highest levels of pesticide were strawberries, while the products with the lowest levels included onions, dried plums, avocados, orange juice, or corn.
The results were quite terrifying. Those women who consumed two or more servings of pesticide-high fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower chance of getting pregnant. Also, if they did get pregnant after all, their chances of suffering a miscarriage were 26 percent higher.
One solution might be to go organic
Researchers have been concerned for a long time that pesticide exposure can have serious consequences, especially for feebler people, including children, pregnant women, and older people. Therefore, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which some might regard as healthy, can turn out quite harmful.
However, people shouldn’t worry. They don’t need to stop consuming fruits and vegetables altogether, but they should inform themselves before buying them. One solution would be to consume more products with lower levels of pesticides, and shop for more organic products, as they are less likely to be so harmful.
