The 13-year-old Jackson Memorial Middle School student who shot himself inside the school’s bathroom has passed away at the hospital, the authorities reported. According to the police report, the teen managed to steal a .22-caliber handgun from his mother’s house and to bring it inside the school without raising suspicion.
Diversionary Devices Found in Backpack of Ohio Student
According to the authorities, Keith Simmons, a 13-year-old Jackson Memorial Middle school student, was brought in critical condition to the nearest emergency hospital on Tuesday morning. Simmons was examined by the ER physicians who determined that he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Unfortunately, the Ohio student passed away the following morning, leaving authorities puzzled. Mark Brink, the Jackson Township Chief of Police, commented that the investigators could only speculate on Simmons’ intention, as the teen didn’t confide in anyone about his plans.
According to the authorities, shortly before leaving his mother’s house, the 13-year-old Ohio teen broke into his mother’s weapons locker and stole a .22-caliber handgun which he concealed under his clothes.
Surprisingly enough, the teen managed to smuggle the weapon to school, without his classmates or bus driver noticing. While inside the bathroom, the boy pulled the trigger shortly before 8 a.m., alerting the nearby staff members and students.
After taking the teen to the hospital, the authorities discovered that Simmons’ backpack was filled with diversionary devices such as batteries, bottle rockets, and several other boxes containing ammunition for the handgun.
At this point, it’s unclear what the boy intended to do with the items, but the authorities have yet to exclude the possibility of Simmons staging a school shooting. For the time being, school activities have been canceled, with classes to resume on Wednesday.
Simmons’ death comes nearly a week after Nikolas Cruz shot and killed 17 teacher and students at a Florida, high school.
