Climate change is one of the biggest problems the world is facing. This issue is getting more and more concerning every day. The effects of climate change have started to show and there can be consequences that can’t be reversed.
A new study focused on the impact of climate change on oceans. This research was published in the journal Nature. The researchers wanted to see how climate change affected oxygen levels in oceans.
The findings showed that oxygen levels have declined by at least 2% since 1960. Although it might seem unimportant, this can cause serious damage to the marine life. The lead scientist who conducted this study warned that there could be deadly consequences for marine animals and that can affect humans too.
In order to conduct this study, scientists analyzed data from 1960 to 2010. They looked into temperature, oxygen, and other factors that can show the overall oxygen levels decline. The researchers mentioned that they were able to discover the oxygen distribution as well as the impact it has on the marine life.
The only organisms that can survive when there are low levels of oxygen are bacteria. Another issue is caused by the fact that the oxygen is not distributed evenly. Although the overall oxygen levels have dropped only by 2%, in some places the decline can be a lot higher.
There are two oceans that have suffered a bigger oxygen loss. The North Pacific and the Arctic Ocean are the oceans that have experienced the most signifant oxygen loss in the last 50 years. The researchers mentioned that oxygen is very important for oceans and for marine life. Just like humans, marine animals need oxygen to survive.
One of the biggest problems is that marine animals have little chance of survival if oxygen levels continue to drop. Researchers underlined that this problem should concern people too. The fact that fish and marine animals will die from the loss of oxygen could have a great impact on the economy too.
“The oceans are really a mirror of human health — if they’re sick and dying, then that’s the future of humanity as well,”said researchers.
What is your opinion about this study? Did you know that ocean oxygen levels are declining?
