In an attempt to reduce the amount of sugar in their sweets and confectionaries, Nestle has come up with a new type of sugar. According to the company, products containing this new sugar will taste the same but with will contains 40 percent less sugar.
Nestle, the Swiss food company, famous for their sweets such as KitKat, Smarties, M&M, and Willie Wonka inspired chocolate bars, wants to set the bar higher for the industry. To this end, the company intends of altering the formula used to craft their time-honored sweets.
Doctor Stefan Catsicas is Nestle’s Chief of Technology. Among his other duties, the scientist was in charge of researching a formula for a new type of sugar. The result of his research is a fast-dissolving sugar which contains fewer saccharides that the traditional sugar.
Catsicas declared that the new type of fast-dissolving sugar was created by resequencing the molecular structure of common sugar. Nestle’s Chief of Technology declared that future sweets produced by Nestle would contain up to 40 percent less sugar.
Instead of using sugar to create sweets, other companies use substitutes like Aspartame. Catsicas said that these types of substitutes could be more harmful than actual sugar. The new type of sugar will taste the same like regular sugar, but unlike its natural peer, it dissolves directly into the mouth instead of the gastrointestinal tract.
Nestle’s decision of coming up with a new type of sugar is not surprising at all since the World Health Organization has put pressure on sweets and beverages companies to drastically reduce the amount of sugar used to create their products.
WHO declared that the daily sugar intake must not be higher than 10 percent for a normal adult. In addition, the organization intends to take that threshold to five percent.
If we take into account WHO’s daily sugar intake guidelines, a healthy adult should not consume more than six teaspoons per day, a thing hard to achieve considering that a regular can of Coca-Cola contains more than ten teaspoons of sugar.
WHO believes that in reducing the amount of sugar found in sweets and beverages, we can prevent sugar abuse-related recipes such as diabetes and heart disease.
As for Nestle’s new type of sugar, the company declared that it would begin using the new formula starting in 2018, and, if it works, it will sell it to other companies.
