Unfortunately, we have a piece of bad news. After much deliberation (such effort, wow!), Microsoft has come to the decision of canceling the upcoming Scalebound title. First announced in 2013, the title was scheduled to launch sometimes during 2016. However, the company postponed the launch date for 2017, ultimately canceling the title.
During a recent press conference, Microsoft announced that the much-anticipated Scalebound would not be launched in 2017, stating that it is no longer a lucrative business venture. When asked its reasoning for canceling Scalebound, Microsoft declared that the company plans on focusing on other titles such as Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3, Halo Wars 2, and State of Decay 2.
As for Scalebound, it would seem that we won’t have a chance to discover the awesome story of Drew and his hardcore dragon companion.
It would seem that Scalebound was of those games which were doomed right from the start. According to various online sources, the game’s concept was drafted in early 2006. However, the company postponed working on the game and chose to develop some titles for Wii U consoles like Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101.
Officially, Microsoft’s game designers and developers started working on the game in 2013. Since then, Scalebound made numerous appearances at game conventions such as E3 and Gamescom. As we’ve mentioned before, after taking their sweet time working on Scalebound, which was to be the ultimate combination between steam-punk and medieval-inspired fantasy, Microsoft announced that the game would officially land on Xbox consoles in 2016.
As you would have guessed, it wasn’t meant to be, and the public had to sit tight one more year to see what the company is planning. News regarding Scalebound’s premature death came from all over the place.
Even Hideki Kamiya’s interview seemed to hint that there is something wrong with the game. As you would recall, when asked about the game’s story during an interview, Kamiya said that the team did not finish putting together the cinematic trailer, let alone come up with a coherent story.
So, what did we miss? According to the game’s first trailer and, of course, it’s pre-alpha gameplay trailer; Scalebound was TPP/FPP role-playing game which combined sword-based and tech-based combat elements.
The protagonist of this tale was Drew, who was accompanied by a tech-enhanced dragon called Thuban. Sadly, we will never know what became of the two character or how they wound up together in the first place.
