Emmanuel Zayas, the 14-year-old boy from Cuba with the massive facial tumor recently passed away at the Jackson Memorial Hospital. According to the doctors, the boy died shortly after the tumor removal surgery. Zayas’ parents want to donate the boy’s body so that researchers can find a way to combat Emmanuel’s condition.
Massive Facial Tumor Completely Encompassed Boy’s Face
Zayas’ parents told the reporters that Emmanuel appeared to be in good health. However, when he was just two years of age, the boy was diagnosed with a rare condition called polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, meaning that most of his bones became soft instead of growing normally.
Dr. Robert E. Marx, a surgeon at the Jackson Memorial Hospital and who was involved in Emmanuel’s case since the beginning, declared that the condition facilitated the growth of a benign facial tumor which by the time Zayas was brought to the hospital, weighed 10 pounds.
The boy’s family has been trying for years to a get a visa so that they could fly Emmanuel to the States for his surgery, but they could not obtain it any sooner. Marx said that following the surgery was deemed a success, the doctors being able to remover Emmanuel’s massive facial tumor.
Shortly after that, the boy began showing signs of improvement such as facial muscle tone and pupillary reflexes. Unfortunately, Emmanuel’s condition took a turn for the worst, and the boy became unresponsive.
The 14-year-old passed away on Saturday. Coroner’s report pointed out that death occurred as result of multiorgan failure. Marx commented that Zayas’s body was too weak to handle the physiological shock of this major surgery.
Following the death of the 14-year-old body with the massive facial tumor, his parents decided to donate the little one’s body so that doctors could help others suffering from this condition.
