US’s Department of Defense recently declared that several Marines are currently under scrutiny after a Marine Veteran correspondent discovered a clandestine website which contained nude pictures of active and retired female Marines.
Recently, the Department of Defense has begun an official investigation, after a Marine veteran reporter stated that he found a covert Facebook group which contained inappropriate photographs depicting female Marines. At the Marine Corps’ request, Facebook and Google deleted the account.
The investigation is currently conducted by the Naval Criminal Investigation Service. According to an official Marine Corps spokesperson, several members of the US Marine Corps deliberately shared nude pictures of female members. He also added that the female Marines depicted in the pictures belong to Navy, British Royal Marines, and the Marine Corps.
It also appears that the individual affected by the clandestine website were either on active duty or retired from the Corps. The individual who discovered the Facebook group declared that the female members where depicted in various stages of nudity and that each picture was accompanied by an obscene comment.
Since this is an official internal investigation, the Naval Criminal Investigation Service refused to release any details regarding the identity of the Marines who were affected by the site’s content. Moreover, NCIS said that several active-duty members are currently under scrutiny and might be charged with several violations, as described in the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
The investigators revealed that this clandestine operation involved several members and that the links to the nude photos were shared through a Google Drive account. The Facebook group was called Marines United, and, according to the NCIS, it was accidently discovered by Thomas Brennan, a Marine veteran, and a journalist working at The War Horse.
After Brennan had uncovered the salacious website, the Center for Investigative Reporting got involved in the case. The ongoing investigation revealed that the nude pictures of over two dozen individuals had been uploaded to the clandestine Facebook group. Moreover, upon reviewing the counter, the investigators discovered that the group had more than 30,000 followers.
As for the individuals, whose nude pictures were leaked via the Facebook group, NCIS declared that at least two persons were affected by the website. At this point, the Marine Corps and NCIS are refusing to offer any details about the identity of the Marines who posted and maintained the Facebook group and the Google Drive account.
