Alabama authorities have discovered what seems to be the most severe case of child abuse in the last couple of years. A malnourished adolescent was brought into the local hospital for respiratory issues.
Appalled by his state of health, the hospital immediately called the local police department which apprehended, Richard and Cynthia Kelly, the teen’s adoptive parents. At the moment, the adolescent is struggling to stay alive. The doctors treating the malnourished teen said that the prognosis is uncertain.
Pete Folmar, Helena’s Chief of Police, made a few press comments in the case of the malnourished adolescent. According to Folmar, before the teen was brought into the hospital, his parents kept him locked in the basement for two years or even more.
The doctors who called in the police declared that the 14-year old adolescent was dehydrated, emaciated, and was in acute respiratory distress. In addition, further investigations revealed that the teen had hypothyroidism, and, at the time he was brought in, he was also suffering from hypothermia.
However, there was another aspect which made this case even more revolting. At the time the teen was admitted to the hospital, he weighed no more than 55 pounds (approximately 25 kilograms).
When asked about what prompted them to treat their adopted child in such an atrocious manner, the parents responded that they simply wanted to punish the teen for his misbehavior. However, it’s a big leap from wanting to show your child what he did wrong and locking him in a damp and dark basement like a feral animal.
Further investigations have revealed that the malnourished teen was not restraint during his stay in the basement. The facts, in this case, become even more baffling, as police investigators discover that the arrested couple have another adopted child – a 19-year old girl. In addition, it would seem that another person was living with them at a time, a 21-year old male who is not related to them.
For their crimes, Richard Kelly (56) and Cynthia Kelly (47) have been jailed, and a magistrate set their bond at one million dollars each.
At the moment, the malnourished adolescent is struggling to stay alive. His doctors are doing anything in their power in order to help the teen fight off his condition. We will keep you apprised should there be any development in the case of the Alabama malnourished adolescent.
