A recent study has revealed depression has a bigger influence on the success of a pregnancy than we might have thought. Although it sounds strange, the male partner suffering from depression has a bigger influence on the pregnancy than the female partner. In fact, if the woman is depressed, her chances of getting pregnant remain unchanged. This situation applies to those couples who are trying to conceive and are undergoing infertility treatments.
Men are also important when treating infertile couples
Researchers have explored the factors that might prevent a woman from getting pregnant. While you might expect something related to her, it turns out male depression is actually a much bigger pregnancy inhibitor. In fact, a certain class of antidepressants called non-SSRIs taken by men reduce the chances of a successful pregnancy.
Researchers say these findings are extremely relevant. If male depression has such a big influence on a pregnancy, doctors might adjust their treatment suggestions based on these results. This way, they have more chances to cure infertility.
Male depression seems to have the biggest influence on pregnancy success
Researchers compared female depression with male depression among couples who undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF). This way, they discovered that 41 percent of these women are depressed, as compared to 50 percent of men. Also, they decided to explore the same patterns in couples who are following different fertilization treatments.
Female depression appeared to have a small influence on the success of the pregnancy. For instance, women who took non-SSRI antidepressants were more likely to suffer pregnancy loss during the first trimester. However, male depression was associated with 60 percent smaller chances of the woman ever getting pregnant. This means this phenomenon resulted in fewer live births than in all the other cases.
Therefore, if you thought the mental state of the man doesn’t matter, think again. Fertility treatments depend on many factors to be successful, and male depression seems to be one of the most important.
