With the occasion of the 70th General Assembly of the United Nations which took place yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak declared that Malaysia is willing to shelter 3,000 Syrians in the next three years. He showed his willingness of helping at the evacuation of Syrians.
The Prime Minister put the blame on the Muslim countries, which he believes are responsible for Syrians leaving their own country, thus leading to a social and economic tension across Europe. He also mentioned about the need of finding new solutions in order to cope with this migration crisis.
Najib comforted the American investors by telling them they should not be worried about the country’s political situation, saying it is stable.
Najib told reporters that Malaysia is going to offer the refugees shelter, education and jobs for a limited time, until things improve in Syria and they can go back to their country.
Dr. Mahathir attacks Najib in blog posts, saying that people from Malaysia feel “ashamed” when they travel abroad, as the country is now among the most corrupt states.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi encouraged this measure, stating that it displays compassion with respect to the life of Syrian refugees.
“And it is only when we see that terrible picture of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi washed ashore – and recognize our own children in that tragic boy’s innocent face – that we will act as our better selves,” he said.
The Immigration Department will be responsible for receiving the refugees under immigration regulations.
In January 2016, Malaysia will be organizing a conference on deradicalization where each Asian country is going to offer at least $50,000 in order to help victims with basic needs and medical aid.
Statistics show that in the last 4 years, more than 4 million Syrians ran into other countries, facing poorness and asperities.
