Along with the fun stuff like making snowmen with your kids, enjoying the snow or baking cookies comes the dreaded flu season that endangers all the fun. While you should get a flu vaccination, we also recommend some measures to make sure you keep away the flu.
First thing you should know is that the flu is highly contagious. Also known as influenza, the flu affects the respiratory tract that consists of the throat, nose and ears. The viral infection spreads through sneezes, coughs and even communication. The flu should be taken extremely seriously. Each year around 200,000 end up in hospitals due to the flu.
You should also take note of the fact that even though they have the same symptoms, the flu and the cold are not the same thing. Common cold symptoms include nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, sore throat, runny nose and low grade fever. Flu symptoms are more severe though and can include fever, muscle and body ache, headaches, fatigue, vomiting and diarrhea. The last two symptoms are more common in children. It is very important to know the differences between these two in order to know how to treat them properly.
Let’s not forget that flu is much more dangerous to children than to adults. Kids are almost three times more likely to get the flu because their immune systems are not yet developed. Also, kids spread germs more easily. Over 20,000 kids are hospitalized every year in the United States and around 100 kids die because of the flu.
The flu vaccination that we mentioned at the beginning of the article plays a big role as well. In order to keep you and your family as far away from the flu as possible, get vaccinated at least once a year.
Another important thing that you should practice and teach your kids to practice as well is washing your hands. Washing our hands frequently will keep the germs away. We are advised by doctors to wash our hands as often as we can, especially after coming in contact with a sick person. It is important to scrub well not only under the fingers, but under the nails as well.
We believe that these measures to keep away the flu can be useful for you and your family. Abiding to these simple rules will allow you to make the most out of the winter season.
