According to the most recent survey, there have been recorded low teen birth rates in the United States. This is the seventh year in a row when such a result is achieved. However, America is still among the countries with high rates of teenage moms, if compared to other developed countries.
Specialists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were in charge of the new survey. If compared to that of the previous year, one can observe a drop of eight percent in maternity rates with teenage girls. The last research showed that there were 22.3 births for every one thousand teenage girls in the United States.
Low teen birth rates have been reported for at least a decade. The current rate is more than sixty percent lower than that in 1991, and forty-six percent lower than that in 2007. The present situation of American teen moms is now similar to that of teenage girls in some European countries, such as Albania and Serbia.
One of the lowest, hence best rates with teen births has been reported in Switzerland. According to their statistics, only three in one thousand young women aged fifteen to nineteen become mothers. This is why Switzerland stands as a role model for the United States.
National statistics show that high teen birth rates are reported especially in minority communities. Latins and African Americans are at the top of this list. On the other hand, Asian Americans have the lowest rates with teenagers’ maternity among American minorities.
Specialists attributed the recently registered low teen birth rates in the United States to birth control methods. Educating teenagers about safety means has eventually paid off. Bill Albert declared on behalf of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy:
“We are seeing a cultural change. It’s this magic combination of less sex and more contraception.”
Psychologists explain that becoming a mother is a huge pressure for teenage girls. Raising a child is not an easy task, even more, if these girls lack experience, financial and emotional support, as well as guidance.
The phenomenon of young women getting pregnant way too early in their life has always been a delicate issue. It still is, but the recent statistics give specialists some hope that things are going to be better in the future. This means that teenagers seem to be more responsible and aware of the way their actions could affect their future.
