Researchers from Yale University have discovered a new revolutionary drug that might effectively treat the symptoms of depression. This drug is no other than the well-known anesthetic ketamine that, in about four hours after administration, it starts combating suicidal thoughts and generally improves the state of the patient. For the study, researchers used a nasal spray that was based on the drug.
Antidepressants take some time to work
There are several of depression medications available, but they usually take some time to act. Antidepressants, for instance, have some clear effects only about a month or more of use. However, ketamine showed some immediate influence on the brain, with patients getting better in only a few hours.
For the study, researchers selected 68 adults that were suffering from severe forms of depression. These participants were also taking antidepressants. Then, from all people, researchers selected those with suicidal thoughts, and randomly gave them ketamine or a regular nasal spray as placebo. They took the drug two times every week, for a period of four weeks.
Ketamine relieved depression symptoms in only four hours
Then, they went on to observe the effect of ketamine on these people. They first looked at the symptoms four hours after administering. The next assessments took place after 24 hours, and then after 25 days. Their aim was to compare the effect of ketamine to the one of standard antidepressants. They measured how severe were the symptoms of depression, as well as how likely these people were to think of suicide.
Unlike those people who took the placebo, the patients who received ketamine showed rapid improvements. They no longer considered suicide, and their symptoms had gotten milder. However, there were some side effects associated with the drug. These included headache, a relatively unpleasant taste in their mouths, or dizziness.
The study was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
