After producing beautiful, colored sprites near Puerto Rico over the weekend, the Matthew Hurricane became more aggressive. For the time being, it is described as a category 3 hurricane, but it is expected to grow, sweeping everything in its way. Several countries were severely affected.
No less than fifteen deaths were reported on October 4 due to the intensified Matthew Hurricane. The victims were residents of St. Vincent, the Dominican Republic, the Grenadines, and Haiti. Some of the victims were crushed by their own houses collapsing or by falling trees, as the authorities inform.
According to officials, Haiti is among the most affected countries. Floods invaded villages and destroyed people’s homes and their crops. Statistics point out that similar damages were caused by an earthquake six years ago, in the same country.
Specialists explain that the recent disaster was caused by winds of two hundred kilometers per hour. Officials and volunteers who want to help with the rescue missions can’t reach the affected communities. The bridges collapsed, blocking their access.
More than three thousand families lost their home because of the violent storm. Officials announced that special shelters are already hosting over three hundred thousand people.
The fury of the storm also interfered with internal policy of the country. The elections for president of the state were due to this weekend. However, the event has been postponed, with no other official date set yet.
Officials in the United States intend to help Haiti with their recovery process. The U.S. Agency for International Development promised to send one million dollars to the affected areas in Haiti.
One of the main concerns of authorities in Haiti is cleaning up the affected areas. The water excess must be removed as soon as possible. The more it lasts, the greater are the risks. Water further erodes buildings, and it also gives viruses and bacteria the opportunity to develop. The last thing the country needs is more people who are sick or injured.
The intensified Matthew hurricane is now heading towards the Bahamas. Weather experts predict that the impact will be as violent as that in the other countries. People living in the Bahamas are prepared with water and food supplies for the upcoming storm.
Florida is also among the states that will be hit by the intensified Matthew Hurricane. Several counties in the state were already evacuated as a precaution measure. People hope that the damage will be as insignificant as possible.
