Some foods are considered healthy by default because they look or they sound like things that are good for you. Fortunately, a group of researchers decided to investigate the status of healthy foods available in America. The results contained some surprising findings.
The most shocking discovery was the fact that granola is not part of the healthy foods available in America. It seems that the country’s favorite snack should not be on the list of nutritionists or personal trainers. The main reason for this is the high sugar content in the snacks.
According to the lead researcher of the study, Sharon Zarabi, fitness expert and nutritionist, granola may appear healthy and a good way of controlling your hunger when in a hurry, but in reality they are packed with sugars and added calories that are not good for the body.
“Sugars are defined by their glycemic index, how quickly it gets absorbed into your bloodstream and how it affects your blood sugar levels in the body. Corn syrup has a higher glycemic index than, for example, honey,” Zarabi declared.
The nutritionist recommends individuals to prepare their own granola if they want to continue eating the food without affecting their weight or health.
Granola bars should be made out of toasted oatmeal glazed with something sugary like honey or syrup. When it is prepared at home, people know exactly how much sweet stuff went into their favorite snack and can control their daily sugar intake better.
Another debated food that is considered one of the healthy foods available in America is coconut oil. More than 70 percent of individuals think that the oil is good for health, but only a mere 37 percent of nutritionists agree.
In a similar way, approximately half of the American population believes that SlimFast Shakes are healthy. Nutritionists do not agree with this. Only one in five experts thinks that SlimFast products are to be considered healthy.
Surprisingly enough, a great number of Americans considered frozen yogurt as a healthy alternative for lunch or desert.
Last, but not least, quinoa, that was considered a “superfood” by nutritionists is not that well received by the American public.
Other healthy foods available in America besides the wonder food quinoa, are shrimp, sushi, hummus, and tofu.
