Having an abortion is a quite important decision. This is why a new study from the University of California decided to investigate the matter. The findings show that women don’t have doubts about such a decision, which is equally important as any other health problem that they might deal with.
The results of the study are based on about five hundred surveys from pregnant women. They were asked whether they will be having an abortion. The specialists checked on them several weeks after the survey to see how many of them had really gone through the procedure.
The surveys showed that more than half of the women who participated were thinking about having an abortion. Weeks later, the health experts found out that the majority had already gone through the procedure. Almost ninety percent of the five hundred women decided not to become moms at the moment of the study.
Approximately ten percent of the women decided not to end their pregnancy. According to the surveys, they were not sure about having an abortion in the first place.
The researchers in charged of the study noted that most women see abortion like any other health problem. As a result, they treat it as it is, and since surgery is the right option, they go for it. The findings of the study prove the misconception of women having second thoughts or being afraid of the risks of abortion.
Women are confident about health clinics and their choices. They are aware of the implications of having an abortion, they understand them, and accept them. Ninety percent of the women who participated in the study admitted that they do not regret their choice. Their thoughts before and after the procedure were the same, which means they were constant and confident about their decision.
Advocates claim that there are laws which make it difficult for some women to end their pregnancy. They suggest that health care services regarding abortions should be available for anyone, regardless of the income and financial status of the patients. They complain about facilities being hard to find and requiring several visits to the doctor.
There are states where laws require women to wait for a certain time after signing up for an abortion. The period can exceed to a month, and women can change their mind about the procedure. However, many of them don’t need to reconsider their decision, and waiting one more month in not necessary and even frustrating for them.
The new study showing the women’ opinion on abortion was published in Contraception.
