Remember Monopoly, probably one of the most popular board games in the world? Well, you will be delighted to find out that Hasbro, the company which currently owns Monopoly’s license, is planning on changing the tokens, again.
In 2013, Hasbro decided that Monopoly needs a makeover, and changed the time-honored iron token with a cat. And now, after just three years, the company wants to add new Monopoly tokens, as part of its new game campaign, but it needs your help.
So, if you are a fan of Monopoly and want to help the company make the game better, head over to Monopoly’s official website and vote for your favorite tokens. Users will be able to choose between 50 designs which include a horse, a pair of stylish sunglasses, a ship’s steering wheel, a scooter, an antique telephone, and much more.
Of course, because Monopoly is a whimsical game, the company also included more peculiar tokens such as a hashtag sign, fire, a T-Rex, a vintage camera, emojis, a bunny slipper, a rubber duck, a penguin, and sliced toast.
However, you can also choose to cast your vote for Monopoly’s classic pieces: the shoe, the top hat, the wheelbarrow, the battleship, the vintage race car, the cute cat, and the Scottie dog. Vote casting will end on the 31st of January. Until then, Monopoly fans will be able to choose their eight favorite tokens.
And now something about the game. Did you know that the first version of Monopoly was published at the beginning of the 20th century? Although we all take the classic game for granted, the reality is that not all of us know stuff about the game.
The idea which later became Monopoly belonged to anti-monopoly militant by the name of Elizabeth J. Maggie Philips, who devised this clever game to explain an economic theory. Years late, Philips would patent the game and call it the ‘Landlord’s Game.’
During the thirties, inspired by Maggie’s amazing game, the Parker Brothers created and published the first version of the modern Monopoly, which they called ‘The Fast-Dealing Property Trading Game.’
Since then, designers have tried to improve the ideas laid down by Maggie and the Parker Brothers. The result is a game which can be fun and cringy at the same time, depending on what kind of player you are.
