Gun violence strikes America once again and this is the perfect opportunity for Obama to voice his concern about gun control. President Barack Obama was very quick to come forward and mourn the lives that were lost during the Colorado Planned Parenthood, but also pointed out that it’s about time we looked at gun control legislation because things are really getting out of hand.
Around 2 months ago, Obama came in front of the American people again describing how shootings and procedures that follow have become a routine. Gun control is not revised, people go and shoot people, he has to come in front of everyone and explain that this is not ok and we have to mourn everyone who died and then things cool off for a while. Months later laws are still not revised, people get shot again, he has to come in front of us again, say the same things again and on and on it goes.
Once again, Obama came and declared that “if we truly care about this — if we’re going to offer up our thoughts and prayers again, for God knows how many times, with a truly clean conscience — then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons”. Weapons are simply too easy to obtain and there are a lot of people who “have no business with them”, but wielding them nonetheless.
During the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood that took place on Friday, a man started shooting people without warning. Three people were murdered and another 9 are wounded. The shooter was identified as 57 year old Robert Dear, who is now in custody. Authorities have confirmed that Dear was holding a weapon that resembles the AK-47 and the suspect did not give any reason as to why he proceeded to shot everyone at the meeting.
Obama also wanted to highlight the context in which we find ourselves so that the need to revise these laws be understood clearly. Christmas and the New Year are upon us and this is the worst possible time to lose someone or visit them in the hospital for reasons that could have been avoided should warnings have been heard before.
This is perhaps Obama’s eighth time when he had to address a mass shooting in front of the American people. Every time he does it he has to go through the same things over and over again and when he last spoke about the Oregon massacre, he complained how “numb” we have all become to this routine of indirectly having people killed then mourning them.
Gun violence strikes America once again, but for how long?
