An impressive amount of $73,091 was collected Friday at the 13th annual Relay for Life of Johnson County. According to Barbara Yoder, RFL Event Chair, the most generous sum came from community sponsorships and in-kind gifts (more than $35,000).
The essence of the event consists in the fact that various families and groups affected by cancer gathered together and had a fantastic time. Plus, the power of solidarity inspired everyone and changed their perspective.
School of Hope was the top fundraising team which managed to raise $10,312 and Lisa Lee, the top fundraising person of Keene ISD team, raised $2,811. Another important aspect of this event was that the children had the opportunity to learn more about this disease and the people who are fighting with this merciless enemy.
The relay also has the purpose of commemorating people who have recently passed away, such as Doyle Carver. Plus, kids were passionately involved in raising this money, a type of activity which made them more responsible.
Furthermore, among the people who attended this event were also the ones that pulled through and decided to share their amazing life stories with everyone. However, the relay will not be over until August, as the teams aim to collect at least $100,000. Just in May, four more events are scheduled, so the participants might even have a chance of obtaining more than the target amount.
The 6th of May has been declared as Relay for Life day by Roger Harmon, Johnson County Judge. Some of them confessed that it is so moving to watch the other survivors of cancer doing their lap around the track. An important lesson came along with this event as people who haven’t lost their hope showed everyone that they will not be intimidated by cancer.
The relay was 6 hour long (usually 12 hours), having 428 participants and 33 teams. The weather was also on their side while they celebrated a touching reunion after one year. However, according to Nancy Davis, RFL Online Chair, the event will be wrapped up in the first week of June.
As we can see, people who know how hard life can be are in the end, the ones who manage to enjoy it the most.
