One of the side effects is the slow breathing that can cause death. The agency mentioned that they have been looking for side effects of pain meds that contain codeine for many years. The FDA also indicated that these pain meds could be effective only if they are used right.
Other people who should avoid pain meds and cough syrup that contains these substances are young adults between 12 and 18. The ones that have a lung disease, are obese, or have sleep apnea can take these pain meds, but they need to be very careful.
