A new study shows that England is the worst country you can live in if you are a cancer patient. The survival rate of people with cancer in the country has decreased alarmingly, robbing people of the hope that at least the system might aid them in any possible way.
Even though there are some visible signs of improvement, the chance of surviving is 12 percent lower in England than in the majority of Western countries with health systems just as developed as its own. This was Mirror’s statement when approaching the unfortunate situation.
The study mainly involved observing cancer patients from England, Australia, Canada, Sweden, Denmark and Norway over the last 15 years. Afterwards, the outcomes were compared to see which countries had the best rates. The countries that came in first were Australia and Sweden.
Researchers have identified that 5 percent to 12 percent fewer England cancer patients stayed alive for approximately 5 years less than in Sweden, Australia, Canada and Norway. This is what is most disturbing: in a six country study England is situated on the fourth place.
The lead researcher of the project, Doctor Sarah Walters of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, commended England on making efforts to increase cancer survival rate, yet at the same time she stated that more must be done. The current situation is very unfortunate and the measures that have been taken are simply not enough.
NHS England, however, commented that the survival percentages have come to great hight in the country. In recent approximations showed by the Macmillan Cancer Support, there have been 2.5 million people identified with cancer in England, an increase of about 500 thousand patients, in the last 5 years.
But there still is hope: even though the survival gap is still very high, co-authors of the study have noted that England has improved faster than any other country. The latest improvement was in survival from lung cancer and there has also been an increase survival from breast cancer up to 5 years. This is much better than the countries England was left behind.
While the fight for survival continues, England is still far away from assuring the conditions it is supposed to. Nonetheless, it is struggling to get there. It might just be a matter of time until cancer patients in this country can hope for something better, a more welcoming tomorrow.
