Health authorities are extremely concerned about a dangerous new condition which manifests as a combination of bulimia and type 1 diabetes. The condition, called diabulimia, has alarmed everyone, as it threatens to make many victims. BBC even produced a documentary to get more people informed about the disease, and called it as the moment’s most dangerous disorder.
Diabulimia is the product of a dangerous combination of physical and mental illness. A person who has this disease is also suffering from type 1 diabetes, and is struggling with an eating disorder. What the person does is reduce the amount of insulin they have to take for fear of gaining weight. However, such a behavior is extremely dangerous.
Although it’s not recognized yet, diabulimia is a serious condition
Not taking enough insulin causes patients to suddenly lose weight, as fat deposits are used as a source of energy. However, their body is not able to regulate the levels of blood sugar on its own, and depriving it of insulin can lead to hyperglycemia. Then, the body is no longer able to take energy from calorie intake, and organs start malfunctioning.
Statistics show people who suffer from diabetes are more likely to also have eating disorders, easily leading to the development of diabulimia. About 40 percent of all diabetic women with ages between 15 and 30 also have diabulimia, but men are also susceptible to the disease.
Diabetic people are used to an eating discipline, as they have to be careful with what they consume. Keeping the body under such extreme control, as well as constantly monitoring a diet are elements which contribute to the development of eating disorders. Therefore, we get the fatal combination which results into diabulimia.
Diabulimia is not yet recognized as a real disorder. However, health officials are trying to make people aware that this disease exists, and be more careful if they have a close one who is suffering from diabetes.
