Deadly Teen Shooting – Another Example of Police Violence?
Initially regarded as an irrefutable case of excess of force, the dashboard cam video recently posted on the Internet seems to have dispelled any such concern. Mike Davis, the Arkansas Chief of Police, declared that no police officer should be put in a situation that calls for the deadly use of force, but, regrettably, there are times when these events are unavoidable.
According to the official police report, on Sunday, at approximately 1 a.m. several officers from the North Little Rock Police Department stopped a car after a dispatcher announced that the driver was caught speeding.
Soon after stopping the vehicle, the officers saw that the driver, 17-year-old Charles Smith Jr., was apprehensive and decided to check the vehicle. Smith Jr. and two other occupants were asked to get out of the car.
Upon a closer inspection, the law enforcement officers discovered a small pack of marijuana and a handgun.
Suspect Reacts Violently to Police Arrest
The officers decided to arrest Smith and his travel companions. However, the individual resisted, and the officers had no choice but to pat him down. The dashboard cam video shows an officer while struggling to subdue the 17-year-old driver.
That’s when things got out of hand. Smith managed to free one of his hands and reached towards his belt where he had a loaded pistol. The suspect started firing towards the officers who were trying to subdue him. All attempts to subdue him using the stun gun failed.
The last few seconds of the clip shows an officer firing a couple of shot towards the suspect. Smith was later declared dead at the scene.
