Scientists have recently discovered that coffee might be related to hearing problems. After coffee has been delisted from the carcinogen list, it seems that it is not 100 percent safe to drink.
Until a few months ago there was a debate whether coffee might increase the risk of developing cancer or not. Experts eventually came to the conclusion that this beverage is healthy, and it helps people who had a rough night.
A team of researchers from the McGill University in Canada conducted a study on regular caffeine consumption. Based on the results, they learned that coffee could prevent hearing recovery after a loud noise, increasing the risk of permanent damage.
According to Doctor Faisal Zawawi, McGill otolaryngologist, people usually recover in 72 hours after the exposure to a powerful noise, but if it takes more than that, there are higher chances for the damage to become irreversible.
This hearing disorder is known as auditory temporary threshold shift which is a temporary hearing reduction that occurs when the ears are exposed to a sudden loud noise.
During the experiment, the team used guinea pigs to test the impact of a powerful noise in separate environments, one with coffee and the other without it. Also, researchers exposed the pigs to this noise for one hour every day to simulate the conditions of people spending time at a rock concert.
The experiment lasted eight days and scientists discovered that the pigs from the coffee groups had a substantial hearing loss compared to the ones from the other group.
Back in 2015, health officials from the European Food Safety Authority strongly recommended Americans to reduce their caffeine intake to 400 mg daily from all source of food or beverages and single caffeine doses of 200 mg among the adult population.
Besides this, it is worth mentioning that coffee has no effect if people do not rest enough. Based on a recent study, individuals who sleep only five hours three days in a row should not waste their time drinking coffee because it has no effect.
It was proved that coffee is efficient among people who sleep at least six hours every night. This study has destroyed the concept that coffee is good in any situation. Scientists will continue their research to understand more about the benefits of coffee and its side effects besides possible hearing issues.
